Esther M. Zimmer Lederberg
Giacomo da Lentini Sonnet XXII

How can so great a lady pass
Straight through my eyes, which are so small?
And in my heart how can she dwell,
Borne there by me wherever I should go?

The place she enters stays unseen,
Which puts me in a state of awe;
But I'd compare her to a light,
My eyes the glass on which it strikes.

The fire's light then passes through
Outside, no rupture being made:
Just so she goes through my eyes to my heart,

Not her body, but her image.
My love's renewed because I bear
The likeness of her mortal being.
